  • Many people worry that artificial intelligence will take their jobs.
  • AI may replace some roles, but it will also create jobs.
  • Gen Z has an opportunity to learn and adapt to AI technologies in the workforce.

Some workers fear that artificial intelligence will take their jobs.

“AGI scares me. Confused how people can ignore the risks so much,” one person tweeted about concerns about artificial general intelligence.

The rise of AI may seem particularly daunting to future Generation Z members.

Generation Z is the youngest generation in the workforce and will have a longer working life ahead than older generations. That means their entire careers are likely to be reshaped by AI. The reach of generative AI seems to have exploded overnight, and many employees are not trained on how and when to use the technology. And many business leaders are still developing guidelines.

But as digital natives, Gen Z has natural advantages to survive and thrive in this new AI-driven economy. They have grown with technology. And the capabilities of augmented technologies such as AI will enable Gen Z and other employees to hand over some of their day-to-day duties to their digital colleagues. This frees up those adept at using AI to devote more time and energy to the creative, innovative and thought-provoking work they seek.

As long as Gen Z remains flexible and adaptable, they have the potential to thrive in an AI-driven workforce.

“If you’re just starting out, the important thing is that every job is being redefined now,” said CEO of Pathlight, a software company that uses AI to improve customer service and team performance. , says Alexander Kvamme. data. “You need to think creatively and thoughtfully about what your organization wants and how to achieve that result with the new tools that are available.”

Erin Reilly, director of innovation and entrepreneurship at Moody Communication College at the University of Texas at Austin, said while some people are skeptical about AI, there are schools who are interested in learning new technologies. He said the number of faculty and students was large.

“The fear factor was that they didn’t feel scaffolded or taught how to use those tools to prepare them in the classroom,” she said. says.

The enormity of AI makes education difficult

AI use cases are so wide-ranging that they go far beyond computer science and coding, Riley said.

“To be what I think of as a collaborative team of hustlers, hackers, and designers, it takes a lot of different disciplines coming together and really envisioning what that future might look like,” says Riley. said Mr.

She and her team have worked with the university’s Nursing, Communications, Architecture, Philosophy, and English departments.

“This impacts so many different fields and disciplines that we need to think more about broader and cross-disciplinary efforts at universities,” Riley said. “There is no one domain that solves this problem. It is.”

Agility is the key to preventing AI from replacing us

Riley doesn’t believe AI will replace humans at work, and students typically don’t have that fear, she said. But staying adaptable, learning and experimenting with new technologies is key to building a career.

One example: understanding AI models will become an increasingly popular job.

“It’s very hard to train a model,” says Riley.

“Knowing how to have these conversations and how to train models is a new skill,” she said, adding that agile engineers are becoming the professionals in demand.

Pathlight head Kvanmeh said workers who have not incorporated AI and other emerging technologies into their careers risk being left behind.

“If you’ve never used this technology yourself, you can’t compete with people who are proficient at using this technology,” he added. “The good news is that it’s easy to learn, but you have to take the bus.”
