Amazon’s executive chairman has urged Prime Video’s Mike Hopkins to revamp the streaming service to bring AI to the forefront.
A project born from a lighthouse
The resulting project, Lighthouse, will highlight Amazon’s AI capabilities for the more than 200 million consumers using Prime Video. This is seen as a key part of Amazon’s international efforts to advance its prominence in the artificial intelligence field, especially as rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic accelerate.
The company has committed about $200 billion in capital investment for AI development this year, with OpenAI and Anthropic making a combined initial investment of $23 billion.

Amazon ramped up its entertainment efforts in 2022, paying $85 billion to acquire MGM, giving it access to high-profile entertainment series including James Bond.
Nevertheless, the service released a significant redesign in July 2024 to make it easier to identify which content is free and which content is paid for, such as with Paramount or TV show subscriptions.
