New video portrait: “AI in Science: How AI is changing the questions we ask – Klaus-Robert Müller”
Artificial intelligence has long been a part of our daily lives, from search engines and language models to medical applications. However, its greatest potential may lie not in simply solving existing problems more efficiently, but in fundamentally transforming science itself. The new Hector Fellows Academy video portrait “AI in Science: How AI is changing the questions we ask – Klaus-Robert Müller” explores how artificial intelligence is enabling new discoveries and why it will shape the future of research for years to come.
Klaus Robert Müller, professor of machine learning at the Technical University of Berlin and director of the Berlin Institute for Learning and Data Infrastructures (BIFOLD), is one of the world’s leading researchers in artificial intelligence. He has been a member of the Hector Fellows Academy since 2023. His research focuses on explainable AI systems and how machine learning techniques can help scientists across a wide range of disciplines discover previously hidden patterns in complex data and formulate entirely new research questions.
For Klaus Robert Müller, the real value of AI lies not in the race to build more powerful algorithms, but in using it as a tool for scientific discovery. As he explains in a video portrait, “When you introduce AI to science to enable new discoveries, whether in medicine, quantum mechanics, or any other field, the effects become more permanent. In some ways, it’s like giving a gold miner a shovel so they can keep digging for another 100 years.” Whether in quantum chemistry, materials science, or medicine, artificial intelligence is becoming an essential tool in scientific research.
Another key focus of the film is explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Modern AI systems often deliver impressive results, but the decision-making processes behind them are often difficult to understand. This transparency is especially important in sensitive fields such as healthcare, where trust in AI-assisted diagnosis and treatment decisions depends on being able to explain how the conclusions were reached. The practical application of explainable AI is illustrated through the work of Laure Czernik, a postdoctoral researcher in the Klaus-Robert Müller team whose PhD project is funded by the Hector Fellows Academy. She is developing machine learning methods that use genetic data to more accurately classify brain tumors, with the long-term goal of reducing the need for invasive cranial procedures for patients.
Klaus Robert Müller’s research highlights the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for science. Using AI, researchers can uncover complex relationships, generate new research questions, and accelerate scientific discoveries across a wide range of fields. As such, artificial intelligence is much more than a technology for everyday life and is becoming a major driver of tomorrow’s science.

His vision was to strengthen Germany as a leading center for research and science, foster a positive public debate on social issues, and contribute to solving global problems.
