Harper raises $47M to modernize business insurance with AI

AI For Business

Harper, an AI-powered commercial insurance brokerage, has raised $47 million in seed and Series A funding.

The round was led by Emergence Capital with participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV, Antler, 10X Founders, Fellows Fund, and Outset Capital. The company also noted that the Series A is the largest public Series A ever raised by a Black founder.

Harper uses artificial intelligence to automate the traditionally labor-intensive processes of commercial insurance brokerage, including reading applications, routing submissions, managing quotes, and communicating with underwriters. The platform claims to provide compensation to businesses within 24-48 hours.

The company currently partners with more than 165 insurance companies and serves customers in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, transportation, and construction.

Harper has served over 5,000 businesses in the 13 months since its launch. The company says it targets complex commercial risks where accurate insurance coverage has a significant impact on operations, citing examples such as a daycare center not being able to open or a logistics company not being able to hire drivers without timely insurance.

The new capital will be used to grow Harper’s engineering, account management and operations teams, deepen carrier relationships through direct appointments and program expansion, and further develop its AI infrastructure.
