Government issues directive on use of AI in national emblems and symbols

Applications of AI

AMMAN, July 11 (Petra) – The government on Saturday issued a circular on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) programs, tools and applications in the handling of national emblems, national flags, banners, symbols of sovereignty, images and official seals.

The directive stated that AI technology has the potential to undermine the integrity and authenticity of these emblems and symbols, or change their nature or approved form.

This applies to all ministries, public sectors, public institutions and bodies, public universities, local governments, Greater Amman Municipality, Common Service Councils, and government-owned companies.

It states that AI programs, tools, or applications may not be used to create, generate, modify, process, enhance, or alter national emblems, national flags, flags, symbols of sovereignty, images, and official seals, or introduce visual elements or effects, if such actions would undermine their authenticity or change their approved form or content.

It ordered that national emblems, flags, banners, symbols of sovereignty, images, or official seals created, modified, or manipulated using artificial intelligence technology may not be published, distributed, adopted, or used if such use would undermine their integrity or official status.

This circular calls for the use of original or approved versions of national emblems, national flags, banners, symbols of sovereignty, images, and official seals, given the rapidly expanding use of AI applications in design and content creation, and the potential for unintentional changes to the format, colors, and details of approved national symbols.

However, this does not preclude the use of AI technology in media planning, idea development, content creation, analysis and review, and improving presentation methods, provided it does not violate the authenticity, form, content, or official specifications of national and sovereign symbols.

This order was issued taking into account the enduring national and sovereign importance of these symbols and the provisions governing the use of symbols under current law, with the aim of protecting them from alterations and manipulations that may undermine their authenticity, integrity or official status, and ensuring their correct and uniform use in media, official, digital and advertising materials.

The government called on relevant organizations to take the necessary steps to ensure that their employees, users and staff comply with the provisions of the regulations.
