Google’s Bard, the recently launched chatbot, can now write software code, the tech giant has announced. The move comes as Google tries to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a competitor that first brought consumer-facing AI chatbot capabilities to market.

Paige Bailey, group product manager at Google Research, said in a blog post published online: Friday.

Released with stricter guardrails than ChatGPT, Google says Bard will let you code in more than 20 popular programming languages.

“From now on, Bard can help you with programming and software development tasks such as code generation, debugging, and code explanation. You can also easily export your Python code to Google Colab, no need to copy and paste.Bard can also help you create functions for Google Sheets,” Bailey wrote. .

Bard can also explain why he wrote the code. According to the tech giant, this is a useful tool for anyone who isn’t too familiar with coding but who knows the basics enough to add snippets of code to his website.

Bard can also help debug your code if a particular snippet doesn’t work as intended. Type “This code didn’t work. Please fix it” and Bard will help you debug it and walk you through the process along the way.

Google warns that Bard is still an “early experiment” and may generate code that doesn’t work. But the company seems optimistic that Bard will be an important tool in the toolbox for people looking to create interesting things online.

“Bard is already helping people with everyday tasks, from creating presentations and creating lesson plans, to inventing new recipes and planning workout routines,” explained Bailey.

“With new coding capabilities, we are excited to apply generative AI to accelerate software development, stimulate innovation, and help people solve complex engineering challenges.”
