When Sora was announced by OpenAI in early February, it quickly gained attention compared to other generative AI video tools.
Google announced Veo, a new generative media model aimed at creating 1080p high-definition videos. Announced during the Google I/O event, Google claims that Veo can create videos longer than one minute, but it doesn't say how long it will be.
Veo is also supposed to understand film terms such as “creating a time-lapse” and “aerial photography of a landscape.”
Currently, Veo is only available to a limited number of users within VideoFX. If you're interested in checking out Veo, there's a waiting list that curious filmmakers can sign up to.

Between the power of the Imagen photo generation model and Veo, Google is leaning towards realism. This turtle video feels like a documentary about Earth and other oceans.

Blue air puppet dancing like crazy
In comparison, this inflatable blue guy is just stupid. The reflection of the light from the head is not good enough, and the asphalt of the parking lot itself feels unrealistic. The camera moves in a slightly nauseating manner. It shows there's still a way to go, but it's still impressive.

rainbow crochet elephant
Google seems to really like the idea of a crocheted elephant, as one of the promotional images for the Imagen 3 model also featured one. However, it looked more like a toy than this bright rainbow of mammals.
What particularly attracts attention in this work are the colored borders and colored outlines. It feels more like a unified work of his than just a crochet pattern pasted into an elephant-shaped hole.

road bike gonzo
This was the point-of-view video of a cyclist descending a gentle mountain road that made me stop. The mountains themselves remind me of a combination of the Swiss Alps and California's early summer Sierra Nevada mountains.

This video is impressive just for the smoke effects. At a time when even human-made video games and movies still suffered from smoke effects, this video seems to solve that problem.
The colors that show through the smoke are also interesting. It would be great if the smoke was thinner to see how Veo handles different levels of opacity, especially when there's a human face in the background.
