Google Photos has introduced new AI-powered features that allow static images to be converted into short videos and stylized artwork, such as animation and 3D animation. These tools are currently available in the US and aim to provide a more creative experience with everyday photography on Android and iOS.
Google Photos are used by over 1.5 billion people around the world, and deploys free artificial intelligence tools that turn old memories into artistic works. New features such as Photo-to-Video conversion and Style Remix allow users to easily animate and style photos using cutting-edge models from Google's AI Research.
Photo-to-video functionality powered by Google's VEO 2 model allows users to generate 6-second video clips from still photos. Options like “Subtle Movement” and “I Feel Fortunate” help users choose how their photos are animated. This feature has begun to be deployed to Android and iOS users in the US.
Remix old photos into anime or 3D art
Another exciting update is the remix feature powered by Google's Imagen AI model. Users can instantly convert photos into different styles. Anime, 3D, etc. The stylized image contains a SynthID watermark to confirm the origins in which the AI was generated.
The remix feature will be featured to users in the coming weeks and can be accessed through the new “Create” tab in the Google Photos app. This tab also has existing features such as collage and highlight videos, with regular updates planned for more experimental tools.
User feedback forms the tools of the future
Google confirmed that these features are experimental and that user feedback plays an important role in evolution. Users can respond with thumbs or thumbs to show whether they like AI output, and help Google refine these tools over time.
With these upgrades, Google Photos is becoming more than just an image backup tool, but a creative platform that allows anyone to use AI to make photo memories.
