Google is introducing an experimental feature to Google Maps that uses AI to help users find local businesses that meet their specific needs.
AI-powered discovery
This new feature leverages large-scale language models to analyze Google Maps' database of more than 250 million locations, photos, ratings, reviews, and more.
Enter conversational search queries and Google Maps will provide personalized recommendations for local businesses, events, restaurants, and activities.
For example, if you ask Maps to recommend places with a vintage vibe in San Francisco, it will return suggestions such as clothing boutiques, record stores, and flea markets.
Results are categorized with photos and review highlights, explaining why they meet your criteria.
Refine your search by asking follow-up questions like “How about lunch?” to return recommendations for vintage-inspired eateries. You can also save suggested locations to a list for later reference.
Google says the technology can help manage unexpected or changing itineraries. Request “Rainy Day Activities” and instantly get indoor options tailored to your current weather and location.
This feature also takes group dynamics into account. Families can request “kids options” to see curated suggestions for kid-friendly places like children's museums, arcades, and indoor play areas.
Early access experiment with local guides
For this early preview, Google is seeking feedback from a select group of local guides. Their input will help shape AI technology before widespread deployment.
This announcement represents Google's latest effort to integrate generative AI into Maps to transform how users find and explore local businesses. By combining large-scale language models with a vast database of maps, Google aims to provide hyper-personalized recommendations tailored to your every need and interest.
Impact on local search
The impact on local search and customer discovery is significant, potentially driving more qualified traffic to niche businesses and lesser-known attractions and events.
As Google continues to hone its AI capabilities, businesses may need to optimize their online information in new ways to rank for conversational search and leverage the technology.
