google Google Africa Applied AI Lab has opened applications for its new AI startup and research commercialization program for African founders and researchers building products at Google, based at the Accra AI Community Center in Ghana A.I..
Applications open on July 1, 2026 and close on August 31, 2026. Notifications will begin in September for selected applicants, Google said, ahead of an initial collaborative development period from mid-September to early December.
The program will support teams across Africa working on AI products and services across five areas: future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity, and entertainment.
Selected startups will receive early access to Google DeepMind models, including Gemini, Gemma, and Veo, to test commercial use cases before general market release. The lab also provides technical guidance and go-to-market support from Google Research, other Google teams, and venture capital partners.
The first phase will culminate in an in-person product demo day at the Accra AI Community Center in early December. There, participating startups will present to Googlers, investors, and partners.
Google targets AI-native startups in Africa
Google says the Google Africa Applied AI Lab aims to support founders who use AI research to address “real-world challenges unique to Africa” and help build what the company calls “Africa’s first generation of AI-native unicorn startups.”
The lab is positioned as a zero-to-one commercialization platform, connecting African founders and researchers with Google experts to collaboratively build AI products.
Applicants must be current full-time founders or researchers aspiring to become startup founders. Google says startups with funding and commercial traction from pre-seed to Series A will be prioritized, but founders and researchers with early-stage ideas are also welcome to apply.
Startups from pre-seed to Series C and beyond are eligible if they have a clear idea for using Google AI to create impact. Co-founders or the entire team are not required, but team composition will be evaluated.
Selected teams will get access to the model and VC support
Selected startups are expected to make substantial use of Google AI, although Google says participation is not exclusive. Teams can use other models and tools in conjunction with Google’s AI technology.
Support packages include early access to Google DeepMind models and practical guidance from Google Research and other Google teams around the world. Alongside Google AI Futures Fund, VC firms 4DX Ventures, Norsken22, Novastar Ventures, and Ventures Platform are also participating.
Google says some participants may be eligible for funding from the Google AI Futures Fund and partner VC firms. Joining the lab does not require startups to give up any equity or ownership, but Google says teams may be given funding opportunities.
The co-development process is tailored to each startup’s stage and needs. Selected teams will not be required to be based in person at the Accra AI Community Center throughout the co-development period, but will be required to attend the December Demo Day in Ghana.

The Google Africa Applied AI Lab will operate from the Accra AI Community Center. Google describes the community center as a hub for AI ecosystem development, innovation, and responsible AI activity in Africa.
The center will provide collaborative space and technology hub support, with a focus on addressing the AI skills gap. Google says the Applied AI Lab will remain available to entrepreneurs, founders, and researchers after the initial collaboration period ends.
Applicants will be reviewed against criteria related to Google’s investment focus areas. Google may ask applicants for detailed information during the screening process, but says it does not provide feedback to all unsuccessful applicants.
