Google I/O 2024: Gemini Nano AI model brings “Help Me Write” feature to Chrome

AI News

Google Chrome is ready for integration with Gemini Nano. Announced at Google I/O, Gemini Nano will first be used to power the “Help Me Write” feature, providing real-time writing assistance to users directly within the Chrome browser.

For those who don't know, Help Me Write debuted earlier this year and provides basic support for drafting emails, social media posts, and other text formats. With Gemini Nano, users can now expect a more refined and efficient experience. AI models analyze your writing in real-time, suggest improvements, generate creative text formats, and overall streamline the writing process.

The main advantage of Gemini Nano is that it can run locally on your device. Unlike some cloud-based AI solutions, this ensures writing prompts and data privacy. Processing happens directly on your computer, so you don't have to worry about your information being sent to an external server.

A gradual rollout awaitsGemini Nano and “Help Me Write” integration is scheduled to start with Chrome version 126, currently available in the Canary channel. A broader rollout to all users is likely in the coming months. This phased approach will allow Google to gather feedback and ensure a smooth transition for Chrome users.

“Help Me Write” is the initial focus, but the possibilities go far beyond that. Developers will soon be able to access Gemini Nano through a high-level API, allowing them to integrate features such as translation, captioning, and transcription into their web applications.
