Google’s AI summary feature appears to be incorrectly interpreting searches for specific words as instructions rather than displaying dictionary definitions. Users on X (formerly Twitter) recently pointed out that searching for words like “ignore,” “ignore,” and “dismiss” can trigger a response in which the AI behaves as if it had been given a command, rather than being asked what the word meant. AI Overview is designed to use artificial intelligence to generate summaries at the top of Google search results. However, in such cases, the system reportedly responds with a phrase such as “Ignore previous prompt” rather than providing a dictionary-style explanation.Before the rollout of AI Overview, when users searched for individual words, Google Search typically returned results from websites like Dictionary Box and Merriam-Webster. Now, AI-generated summaries are often displayed instead. According to the report, adding the word “definition” to a search such as “ignore definition” doesn’t necessarily solve the problem, and the AI will still generate prompt-like responses.This issue highlights one of the challenges in integrating AI systems more deeply into search capabilities. AI Overviews has previously generated inaccurate or anomalous answers, including previous examples of viruses suggesting adding glue to pizza and describing “blinker fluid” as an actual product.
