“AI-generated videos and other online materials have led a significant number of people to believe that I refused the public forum. That is simply not true.”
Gloucester Mayor Ashley Bowkett explained why she changed her mind about holding a special meeting before Christmas.
Burnwood's Liberal Democrat councilor said he wanted to “set the record straight” following online comments and media coverage of last night's (December 18) special meeting which gave an update on the council's dire financial situation.
He said he had never refused to hold such a meeting, taking aim at his AI-generated video, but felt holding it after Christmas would give councilors more time to consider the information.
Authorities have applied to the government for an emergency loan of between £12.5 million and £17.5 million.
“In light of recent reporting and commentary, I would like to set the record straight regarding my role as Mayor in relation to the special council request regarding Gloucester City Council’s finances,” he said. “I never refused such meetings.
“From the outset, I agreed to hold a special council meeting in response to the Conservative leader's original request and in line with our statutory obligations. The only issue was timing.
“In my view, holding the meeting after Christmas would have given all MPs more time to consider and reflect on the financial information provided at the December 17 parliamentary briefing.
“However, in view of further discussion from Conservative group leaders, and to allow public scrutiny to take place sooner, I have moved the meeting forward to December 18th.
“Unfortunately, AI-generated videos and other online materials have led a significant number of people to believe that I have refused public debate.
“That is completely untrue and contradicts written communications between me and the group's leaders, some of which are beyond my expectations as an elected official. I am always willing to engage in logical debate and honest disagreement, but I will not be swayed by veiled threats, online stunts, or fabrications of events.”
