Scholars and church leaders will discuss the impact of artificial intelligence at a meeting of the Catholic University in Milan this week.
ACU Vice Chancellor and SACRU Chancellor Professor Zlatko Scurbis will chair the 2023 Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities (SACRU) Scientific Colloquium. Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonza, Minister of Culture and Education, will deliver the keynote address.
As emerging and generative technologies become mainstream, AI has impacted the global research landscape and changed what is expected of graduates.
The Science Colloquium provides a platform for thinking about the role of SACRU University in meeting the challenges of the AI age.
The conference brings insights from the worlds of philosophy, law, computer science, informatics and theology, helping build bridges between the hard and social sciences.
ACU Philosophy Professor Sam Baron presents on the opportunities and challenges posed by explainable AI.
“AI systems are being deployed as a basis for decision-making across many areas of daily life,” said Professor Baron.
“Often, we don’t understand how these algorithms work, nor why they give outputs based on the inputs they receive.
“The research focus in Explainable AI (XAI) is to identify methods that can explain how AI systems work.
“The need for XAI is becoming increasingly important at the regulatory level, and there is a move to enshrine the clarification requirement into law.
“We really need philosophical expertise to help shape the development of XAI, and an opportunity to leverage our wealth of philosophical knowledge to improve individual outcomes in the face of AI.
“The important thing to remember is that when we discuss XAI, we are not talking about the idea that machines could become fully conscious and eventually become science fiction.
“The problems that XAI needs to address are real, and the evils that XAI needs to remedy have already happened.”
The Colloquium will produce an Opinion that reflects SACRU’s views on the future of higher education and university research in response to emerging social challenges and technological innovations.
The Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities is a network of universities dedicated to excellence in research and teaching, engagement and global collaboration grounded in Catholic social education.
The 2023 SACRU Scientific Colloquium will be held on July 13th and 14th at the Universidad Catolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
