European law firms have challenges with AI in their legal work. Common AI tools are used in research and writing, but courts are taking note of cases where made-up references and incorrect legal citations are present.
In Belgium and other countries, judges have intervened to reopen cases and consider penalties after discovering errors related to the use of untested AI. The problem is obvious. Speeding without verification is becoming a legal risk. This is the gap Belgian legal tech startup Alice wants to fill.
Ghent-based Alice has raised €1 million in pre-seed funding to build an AI workflow specifically designed for legal casework where accuracy, traceability and human oversight are essential. The round was led by NewSchool and Seeder Fund, with participation from several Belgian angel investors.
With the new funding, the company plans to further develop its technology and work closely with its legal team to refine how AI fits into daily operations.
A platform for lawyers and legal teams
Founded by Jeroen Ville and Joren Coulier, Alice is a Belgian AI platform for lawyers and legal teams.
the founders said TFN“We started Alice because, as practicing lawyers, we saw firsthand the true need for AI in litigation and dispute resolution, but we couldn’t find any tools that we could actually use in our day-to-day case work. Everything was transactional/contract/compliance focused, too generic, or too fragmented.”
The platform supports day-to-day legal case processing, from analysis and research to argumentation and document preparation, through a single, integrated workflow that is tightly controlled by lawyers.
“None of the tools have started with a case and aligned itself with the workflow of lawyers building a case from document to argument to draft. Alice was built to change that: one intuitive workflow from analysis to drafting, with lawyers always in control,” the founders elaborate.
The company says it has already acquired more than 60 customers in a short period of time (and that number continues to grow).
What about diversity?
When asked about diversity, the founder explains, “The team consists of 3 founders (male), 1 CSM (female), 1 CPO (male) and 1 Romanian backend developer. The two founders, Jeroen Villé and Armin Wintein, are lawyers, and the third founder, Joren Coulier, is a civil engineer specializing in computer science. CMS is a former lawyer and former human resources manager. CPO was an innovation manager in a medium-sized company” in a Belgian law firm. ”
