German data protection officials accused Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company DeepSeek of illegally transferring user data to China.
Meike Kamp, a Berlin commissioner for data protection and information freedom, reported Deepseek to Apple and Google, and asked American Companies to remove DeepSeek from the app store.
In a statement released Friday, Kamp said Deepseek did not provide “persuasive evidence” that users' data is protected as required by European Union law.
“Deepseek transfers user data to China is illegal.” Kamp said“Chinese authorities have extensive access to personal data within the influence of Chinese companies.”
“In addition, Deepseek users in China do not have the enforceable rights and effective legal remedies guaranteed by the European Union,” Kamp said.
She said Apple and Google should check the report and decide whether to delete the app.
Kamp said her office asked Deepseek to comply with EU law to transfer data outside the BLOC or to pull the app from Germany, but that DeepSeek didn't get either option.
Under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), businesses are prohibited from sending data outside the region unless certain safeguards are in place in the country in which the data is transmitted.
Deepseek claimed it was created at a fraction of the cost of its competitors when it launched the AI model.
