India faces an 82.9% shortage in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) skills despite having an AI talent pool of around 920,000 professionals, according to a report by staffing firm Quess Corp.

Demand for specialized capabilities such as GenAI, AI deployment engineering, governance, and machine learning operations (MLOps) is rapidly increasing as enterprises move from AI experimentation to production-scale deployments, according to the report.

The study, based on 350,000 AI-related job postings in the past 90 days, found that GenAI has the largest talent gap, followed by AI implementation engineering (72.4 percent), AI governance (70 percent), and MLOps (68 percent).

India remains one of the world’s largest AI talent markets, but it has the largest shortage of skills needed to deploy, operate and manage AI systems at scale, the report said.

“Fundamental ML and decision intelligence are adequately staffed; GenAI, AI model operations, AI deployment engineering, natural language processing (NLP), AI governance, and AI security all show significant deficiencies,” the report states.

AI security roles are 67% deficient, while NLP roles are 63% deficient.

Meanwhile, employment demand for basic AI skills remains relatively balanced, with shortages decreasing significantly in areas such as ML (29%) and decision intelligence (17%).

The findings suggest that the challenge for employers is no longer about access to general AI talent, but rather having specialized experts who can build production-ready systems and integrate them into the company’s workflows.

The role of specialized AI

According to the report, India has a large pool of professionals with basic AI and analytics capabilities, but a worrying minority of workers have expertise in areas such as model deployment, governance frameworks, observability, security, and enterprise-scale AI implementation.

The report estimates that India currently has around 920,000 AI professionals in core AI and AI-embedded roles.

However, demand is increasingly focused on specialized features.

Almost 68 percent of AI hiring demand is now for core AI roles, with the majority of the available workforce concentrated in AI-adjacent positions that support implementation and business transformation, according to the report.

He added that organizations are increasingly looking to deploy AI systems in customer service, software development, operations, marketing, compliance, and decision-making functions, rather than focusing on experiments and proof-of-concept projects.

The report also highlighted the emergence of new roles related to the deployment of agent AI systems and enterprise AI.

Hiring demand for positions such as Agenttic AI Developer, GenAI Engineer, AI Platform Engineer, and AI Product Owner has skyrocketed over the past year as companies seek to operationalize AI across business functions.

“In corporate and advisory functions, the demand for AI is shifting to judgment-intensive jobs. These job descriptions are not looking for model builders; they are looking for functional experts who can use AI to improve decision quality, discipline management, and workforce performance,” the report said.

Lack of mid-level human resources

At the same time, employers continue to face a severe shortage of mid-career talent.

According to the report, nearly half of AI hiring demand is concentrated among professionals with 3-5 years of experience, creating strong competition for workers who combine technical expertise with real-world implementation experience.

AI jobs by 2030

According to Quess Corp, India is expected to create over 2.3 million AI-enabled roles and transform over 4.5 million existing jobs by 2030.

The report states that future workforce demand is likely to be driven by professionals who can implement, manage and scale AI systems in real-world business environments, rather than traditional AI research jobs.
