Google’s next big AI rollout is just around the corner. This will ensure the turnaround that has taken three years.
The company’s next large language model, Gemini 3.0, is expected to be released soon. Company employees are making fun of it. CEO Sundar Pichai said it would be released by the end of the year. Prepare for impact.
Anticipation is at its peak on X and various Discord channels, and AI truth experts are convinced that Gemini 3 is already out there. Google has a history of semi-secretly testing its models, so this may not be a complete conspiracy.
But it’s not just them. Gemini 3 is a well-known name in the AI world, and we’ll be interested to see what Google brings out of it. Gemini 3 is expected to be better at coding and multimedia generation (an improved version of Google’s viral image tool Nano Banana will be included in the new model).
Since the announcement of ChatGPT in late 2022, the narrative surrounding Google has been one of a sleepy incumbent playing catch-up. That was true. Facing an existential threat for the first time in a while, Google quickly pivoted its team to bring generative AI to many of its flagship products.
Since then, the sleeping giant has come back to life. Gemini users are rapidly increasing. AI hasn’t shaken up Google’s advertising dollar (so far). Calls for Pichai’s resignation have died down.
Google is trying to catch up
To keep up, Google took advantage of its “full stack.” In addition to building the model, we also have distribution channels through our own products and infrastructure through our cloud business.
In this way, Google has largely stayed out of the increasingly complex web of AI companies reaching out to each other for help and fueling bubble fears.
Google also has big goals ahead of it. OpenAI’s long-awaited ChatGPT 5 was released this year with more fizz than bang. Was it simply a signal that AI was entering a “boring” era? Or did OpenAI have no more power?
If Gemini 3 is a big hit (and insiders are now telling Business Insider that the new model is very impressive), it could give Google a chance to snatch the top spot it’s been competing to take back since the generative AI boom began.
This would be a bad scenario for OpenAI, which doesn’t have a stack like Google and has historically enjoyed a competitive advantage primarily due to first-mover advantage and numerous industry partnerships.
Google still has branding issues to solve. ChatGPT remains the “Kleenex” of AI, the first name that comes to mind when we talk about the technology. “Google” became an online search when it came to chatbots.
There’s also a lot of catching up to do with OpenAI for users. Google announced that Gemini apps have reached 650 million users monthly ChatGPT has approximately 800 million active users weekly active user.
Gemini’s growing popularity among younger users will help, but there’s still a big gap to fill.
The company’s years of bets on the cloud, chips and researchers are finally paying off. Even if Gemini 3 is a huge hit, Google has to make sure it doesn’t fail.
No pressure.
