A new survey conducted by Gartner reveals that 79% of global enterprise strategists believe AI, analytics and automation will be key drivers of success over the next two years.

The survey, which ran from October 2022 to April 2023, highlights companies’ increasing focus on next-generation technology. Companies are now turning to sophisticated systems to handle not only repetitive and basic tasks, but also high-value projects such as strategic planning and decision-making that are directly related to business growth. Gartner interviewed nearly 200 corporate strategy leaders for the study, covering companies serving a variety of industries in North America, Western Europe, Asia Pacific, Australia and New Zealand.

Despite only 15% of strategic planning and execution activities being automated today, survey respondents expressed a high level of optimism about what lies ahead. In fact, most people say that an average of 50% of these activities could be partially or fully automated in the near future.

“Leveraging analytics and AI to make more efficient and insightful strategic decisions is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing enterprise strategists this year,” said David Gartner, director of research at Gartner. Akers said.

“For years, strategists have been telling companies, ‘If you want to stay competitive and efficient, you need to go digital,'” he continued. “Now they seem ready to apply that guidance to their workflow.”

Advanced technology research is progressing

Survey results show that established technologies are being actively adopted by enterprises, while emerging technologies are still largely in the experimental stage.

For example, 72% and 62% of respondents said they have implemented descriptive and diagnostic analytics into their workflows. However, approximately 26% and 41% have this answer for more advanced prescriptive and predictive analytics. Rather, most (47% and 45%, respectively) said they are piloting or gathering knowledge about these technologies.

Similarly, just 20% and 23% of respondents said they have systems in the implementation stage for machine learning and natural language processing capabilities, which are currently trending. And most are still in testing and piloting stages.

The key to deploying advanced AI and analytics

To move from experimentation to deployment, strategy leaders should address the three key challenges identified in the Gartner research: determining business use cases, getting companies/departments familiar with technologies, and deploying those technologies. The focus should be on dealing with getting the budget to use.

The first is especially important because many advanced technologies are already being used successfully elsewhere. Gartner believes that this problem can be addressed by prioritizing the different use cases that new technology can offer by mapping existing capabilities to specific needs and asking about their purpose, impact and suitability. says.
