The Group of Seven (G7) will issue a joint statement at their next summit pledging to promote the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence in the military domain, diplomatic sources said on Sunday.
The sources cited a draft statement due to be released at the three-day G7 summit in Fasano, southern Italy, which begins on June 13. The draft calls for more widespread use of AI, but also stresses the need to tackle disinformation and other risks.
According to the sources, G7 leaders will recognize the role of AI in the development of society and pledge in the planned statement to “promote safe, secure and trustworthy AI” while pursuing an “inclusive, human-centred digital transformation.”
The move comes as the world grapples with the rapid development of generative AI tools, including pioneering model ChatGPT, amid concerns that the misuse of AI to spread disinformation could threaten democracy and political stability.
In May, the European Union enacted the world's first comprehensive legal framework on AI, banning “social scoring” systems that rank citizens based on a combination of personal data, including their online and offline behavior.
Citing the draft, the sources said the G7 countries are likely to announce the creation of an action plan on the use of AI in the workplace aimed at increasing productivity and improving the quality of the working environment, while also calling for compliance with international law if AI is used for military purposes.
The draft also mentions the need to advance international rule-making under the framework of the Hiroshima AI Process, which was launched after the G7 summit in Hiroshima last year, the official added.
The G7 consists of the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and the EU.
