PhD project investigates student engagement with generative AI tools
Generative AI tools are becoming increasingly common among college students, but questions remain about how these technologies are used and how they impact learning outcomes.
PhD project titled “Investigating student engagement with generative artificial intelligence tools in higher education” It aims to develop evidence-based guidance on how universities can responsibly integrate AI technologies.
The study will investigate:
- When students use generative AI tools
- Why students choose to use AI-assisted resources
- How students interact with AI technology while learning
- The impact of using AI on confidence, belonging, and long-term learning outcomes
The project aims to support the development of AI-literate learners, aligning with Trinity College Dublin’s Education Strategy and wider European guidance on the responsible use of AI in education.
Four-year PhD opportunity at Trinity College Dublin: Mixed methods research combining statistics and educational research
PhD researchers will combine quantitative and qualitative research approaches to understand students’ experiences with genAI.
This research may include analysis of the following data:
- student survey
- Learn resource usage patterns
- Module information
- Interviews with students and other stakeholders
Research methods include advanced statistical approaches such as structural equation modeling alongside qualitative methods such as thematic analysis.
Projects may also include designing and testing interventions to:
- Strengthening students’ sense of belonging
- Supports effective study habits
- Reduce unproductive dependence on AI tools
A funded studentship will cover your salary and fees
Successful applicants will receive financial support through the Trinity Research Doctorate (TRDA).
The funding package includes:
- tax-free scholarships 25,000 euros per year
- EU and non-EU tuition fees covered for 4 years
- Full-time 4-year PhD program
Selected students will be expected to reside in Ireland for the duration of their PhD study.
