For South African businesses, protecting AI is not only about protecting their businesses, but also about protecting customer trust, meeting regulatory requirements, and ensuring an increasingly competitiveness in the digital economy.
Four actions stand out as important for organizations looking to build confidence in AI while reducing risk.
First action
The first action is to develop and deploy appropriate security governance frameworks and operational models that explain the reality of an AI-damaged world. In many cases, adoption of AI in South Africa occurs faster than frameworks designed to manage it.
Regulations such as the Privacy Act (POPIA) set up guardrails for data use, but are not built with generation AI or large-scale machine learning in mind.
Modern governance models need to fill this gap and establish clear accountability for boards, executives and technology leaders as a whole. For example, who is responsible for the AI credit scoring model if it is unintentionally discriminated against or manipulated? CIO, data science team, or board of directors?
Defining these lines of accountability prevents risk from being overlooked. Governance also needs to aligned AI security with business goals and recognize that secure and reliable AI is not only a compliance issue, but also a competitive differentiator.
In South Africa's highly regulated industries such as Financial Services and Healthcare, organizations that can demonstrate strong AI governance build trust with customers, regulators and investors faster.
Second action
The second action is to design a digital core of AI that is safe from onset by embedding protection into AI development, deployment and operational processes. Many South African companies want to experiment with generative AI tools to increase efficiency, such as customer service chatbots, content generation, and supply chain optimization.
However, adopting these technologies without embedding security in advance is dangerous. Consider retailers interacting with customers online using generative AI models. If that model is not secured, it can be manipulated via a rapid injection attack, leading to reputational damage and even fraudulent transactions.
By incorporating security into development and deployment from the start, businesses can avoid costly mods. Secure coding practices, adversarial testing, data validation, and strong IDACCES controls should be treated as standards.
South African organizations should also focus on interoperability to build digital cores, ensuring that AI systems are securely integrated with legacy infrastructure. This approach not only reduces vulnerabilities, but also allows businesses to innovate with confidence, knowing that AI is designed for resilience rather than patching as an afterthought.
The third action
The third action is to maintain a resilient AI system with a secure foundation to actively deal with emerging threats. AI environments are dynamic and so are risks. Models trained today could become vulnerable tomorrow as attackers find new ways to leverage it.
South Africa is already seeing an increase in cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure and financial sectors. Adding AI to the mix will result in threat situations. To counter this, companies need to enhance detection capabilities, enable robust model testing, and improve response mechanisms.
Continuous monitoring is important. The system must be able to detect abnormalities on both input and output. For example, you might try to supply poisoned data to a training set or try to behave abnormally in a live model. Beyond monitoring, the response mechanism must be agile.
A static security approach does not address evolving AI threats. Instead, South African companies should invest in AI-specific incident response playbooks, red team exercises and resilience testing to ensure they can recover quickly when an incident occurs.
Building resilience also means systematic risk planning. If a single AI system fails or compromises, emergency response measurements should be taken to keep core business functions running.
Action 4
The fourth action is to reinvent cybersecurity with generated AI by leveraging it to automate security processes, enhance defenses, and detect threats faster. This is where AI becomes both a problem and a solution.
Generating AI introduces risks, but also provides powerful tools to combat them. In South Africa, where cybersecurity skills are lacking, generate AI can help bridge the gaps by automating everyday security tasks such as log analysis, anomaly detection, and threat hunting. This frees skilled professionals and focuses on high-value activities such as strategy and response.
Generated AI can improve threat intelligence and analyze huge amounts of data from across the industry to identify new risks before they impact your business. For example, local banks can use AI-driven surveillance systems to identify rogue patterns in real time across multiple payment networks, while communications can deploy AI to detect traffic anomalies that could indicate violations.
Defensively adopting the generator AI allows South African companies to build cyber resilience while mitigating the burden of overgrown teams.
Action Roadmap
