A new workshop series aims to help small businesses in central Alberta build practical skills and confidence in the use of artificial intelligence.

Central Alberta First is launching an AI workshop series in collaboration with Red Deer Polytechnic and the Regional Business Support Network.

This effort builds on the Central Alberta AI Conference held in October 2025, which brought together businesses from across the region and was evaluated by 167 attendees. Feedback from this event and insights from the BREWD Regional Business Survey, which includes over 700 companies, revealed the need for accessible, practical AI training.

“Businesses told us they don’t need any more hype about AI; they need practical guidance on how to use AI in their daily operations,” said Michelle McFadden, Small Business Development Advisor at the Regional Business Support Network.

“This workshop series is a direct response to that feedback.”

The first session of the series, “AI for Small Business: What it is, what it’s not, and how to use it today,” is a half-day live online workshop designed for business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, and employees. This session requires no technical background and will focus on real-world applications of AI in areas such as communications, research, workflow efficiency, and decision-making.

“This initiative is a powerful example of what regional cooperation can accomplish,” said Sandra Bryce, economic development manager at Invest Alls and chair of Central Alberta First.

“By working with Red Deer Polytechnic and our regional partners, we are ensuring businesses in central Alberta have access to the tools, knowledge and support they need to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving economy.”

This workshop is the first in a five-part learning pathway developed by experts from RDP’s Continuing Education and Corporate Training division, with each session building towards more advanced operational and strategic applications of AI in business.

“This partnership reflects the region’s strong commitment to supporting business innovation and competitiveness,” said Lisa Henderson, interim dean of RDP’s Donald School of Business.

“By combining applied expertise with real-world business needs, we are helping organizations deploy AI in a practical, responsible and impactful way.”

The program will be offered entirely online to ensure access for businesses across Central Alberta, removing geographic barriers and allowing participants to participate without leaving their businesses, said a media release from Central Alberta First.

Two sessions are available in May and June. Registration is available online. For more information, please visit www.centralalbertafirst.ca.
