OPIT – Open Institute of Technology Specialized PhD in Applied Artificial Intelligencewhich will launch in September 2026 and will be delivered entirely online.
This new program is a Level 8 qualification created in response to growing demand for PhD programs to better reflect the needs of the labor market as processes, regulations and organizational models rapidly change due to the introduction of AI.
Unlike traditional doctoral degrees that emphasize academic research, this doctoral degree focuses on applied research with an emphasis on real-world impact. The evaluation takes into account the robustness of the research and its ability to generate practical solutions.
“In a world where knowledge is evolving at an unprecedented pace, education can no longer be considered a stage in life, but must be a continuous process.” Francesco Profumo, Rector of OPIT, said: “Innovative PhD programs like OPIT are an important step in preparing professionals who can lead technological and social change. Investing in lifelong learning means investing in the future of individuals and society.”
The program is aimed at professionals, executives, and managers in technology, healthcare, finance, education, manufacturing, public policy, and consulting, as well as professionals, academics, and researchers who want to lead the adoption of AI in their fields.
“We see a very clear demand for leaders who can use AI responsibly and productively and translate technological potential into decisions and results.” Riccardo Okrepo, Founder and Director of OPIT, said: “This PhD was created to fill a gap: not a program that focuses solely on theory or an overly narrow field, but a PhD that puts AI at its heart as a strategic tool to tackle the real challenges facing businesses, organizations, and society, and with the flexibility needed by working professionals.”
Applicants must have a master’s degree in a STEM field. Alternatively, candidates with a master’s degree in another field can apply as long as they have at least five years of professional experience in a field where AI has a significant impact.
The program also includes an intermediate termination option. From the second year, students who do not pursue a PhD can choose to pursue a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Applied Artificial Intelligence instead.
“The challenge is not knowing what AI is, but knowing how to rigorously and responsibly manage it and apply it to create value.” Program Director Lorenzo Rivi said: “We train professionals who can design and conduct methodologically robust applied research, lead AI-powered transformation, bridge technical expertise and organizational needs, and facilitate ethical and sustainable artificial intelligence adoption.”
