Quick-service restaurants are among the most aggressive adopters of artificial intelligence (AI), deploying the technology as an operational tool to protect profits in one of the most cost-compressed sectors of the economy.
According to Deloitte, approximately 70% of restaurant operators are actively using or piloting AI to improve loyalty programs and employee workflows, and 8 in 10 restaurant owners say they plan to increase their AI spending in the next year.
The move comes as restaurateurs face increasing financial pressure. The industry is facing declining sales and traffic across many chains, making investing in efficiency a strategic priority.
Leading restaurant brands are now exploring ways to apply AI to ordering, marketing, supply chain management, and labor planning to run thousands of locations with greater operational precision.
From the drive-thru to the back of the house
The most visible AI implementation in quick-service restaurants is at drive-thru windows, where voice systems are beginning to process customer orders.
Hmm! Brands has fulfilled more than 2 million drive-thru orders through its AI voice ordering system at more than 300 Taco Bell stores in the United States. The company is expanding its technology as part of a broader collaboration with Nvidia to integrate AI tools across restaurant operations.

The system includes voice automated agents to take drive-thru and call center orders, computer vision software to monitor drive-thru traffic and kitchen activity, and analytical tools to evaluate restaurant performance and generate operational recommendations for managers.
For many chains, drive-thrus are just the beginning of a broader operational overhaul.
Pizza Hut uses the Byte by Yum Kitchen Platform, a proprietary restaurant operating system that connects ordering, kitchen displays, delivery, and payment systems to track and manage orders as they move within a restaurant. This allows staff to reduce delivery wait times and provide customers with real-time updates on order status. The platform aggregates data from restaurant systems and applies analytics to identify operational bottlenecks.

Chipotle is introducing similar technology inside its kitchens. The company is testing a system developed at PreciTaste that uses AI and machine learning to predict demand and manage material preparation. The software analyzes historical sales data, customer traffic patterns, and other operational signals to predict demand and generate alerts that let staff know how much of each ingredient to prepare and when to start cooking.
Automation is also expanding to food preparation. Chipotle has developed a robotic system known as Autocado that automates the process of cutting, coring, and peeling avocados. Preparing the avocado can take up half the time needed to make guacamole. The robot uses machine learning to recognize changes in the avocado’s size and shape and automatically adjusts its mechanisms.
These technologies allow restaurateurs to reduce prep time and food waste while freeing up their workforce for customer-facing tasks.
Migration to agent management
The next phase of AI adoption in restaurants is moving from task automation to operational decision-making.
Yum Brands has introduced an AI-driven management system under the Byte platform called Byte AI Restaurant Coach. The system is designed to support store managers by analyzing operational data and recommending decisions regarding staffing, scheduling, and restaurant performance.
The system tracks employee attendance, helps plan shift patterns, recommends work adjustments, and assists with drive-through management. It has been deployed in more than 28,000 restaurants within the Yum system and is expected to be expanded with additional capabilities to analyze customer feedback and store performance data.
A more advanced version of this model is emerging in China.
Yum China has introduced an AI assistant known as Q-Smart. This allows restaurant managers to control operations through voice commands delivered through wireless earbuds or smartwatches. This assistant supports work schedules, inventory management, food safety inspections, and allows managers to interact with restaurant systems while working on-site.
