A recent Facebook post aimed at people who “want to use cryptocurrencies” to increase their wealth includes videos of Twitter owner Elon Musk and Alibaba Group co-founder Jack Ma.
“Elon Musk and Jack Ma have launched new software called ‘Quantum AI,'” text appears at the bottom of the video, with Musk and Ma appearing to be sitting on stage holding microphones. “Their algorithm makes him $1,500 in 5 hours depending on whether the cryptocurrency rises or falls.”
Between them is a graphic that says “Quantum AI” and “$1500 in 5 hours”.
The video then urged people to click “More” in the post, which was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its news feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)
Here’s why.
First, this video footage is old. This photo shows Musk and Ma at the World AI Conference in Shanghai in August 2019.
Second, neither person discusses a new piece of software called “quantum AI.” Rather, they are discussing the potential risks and benefits of artificial intelligence, with Musk warning that the technology is evolving faster than humans can comprehend, the BBC reported.
Thirdly, the video is processed to look like Quantum AI graphics and such appear on stage with the men. Original footage of the event shows it didn’t happen.
Finally, anyone who clicks the “Learn More” button on a Facebook post will be disappointed to find a page referring to a site called “lollipoop.top” rather than Ma, Musk, or Quantum AI.
