Ex-Dragon Age Writer David Gayder On Devs Wasted Efforts On AI-Generated Content ‘They Will Fail’

On May 30, Gaider shared a link to a Guardian article on AI’s potential for writing game characters and dialogue. He noted that BioWare has also experimented with procedurally-generated narratives, but the team never achieved at least somewhat acceptable results.

“Even though the procedural lines were written by a human hand, the end result after assembling them was … found to be lackluster every time. It had no soul,” Gaider noted.

Gaider believes the main problem is that procedural content generation only produces “things that look like quests.” In fact, it all comes down to a typical MMO fetch quest, nothing narratively unique or exciting.

“Is that what the players really want? Superficial content that just covers the bases and doesn’t go much further, to keep them playing?” Gaider wrote. “No, some teams will assume AI can do better. It can act like a human DM, creating deep, bespoke narratives on the fly.”

For this reason, the former BioWare writer believes that such an AI would be able to generate imitations of real stories, as they could only create something from pieces of content that were already stored. “But that doesn’t stop many development teams from thinking they should be able to do more, and they’re going to fail,” said Gaidar.

Finally, Gaider concluded that game developers will continue to explore uses for AI. This would waste a lot of effort. ”
