The BJP has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) about deepfake videos circulating on social media. The accusation, led by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnau, comes days after an edited video of Home Minister Amit Shah went viral on social media. The BJP has called on social media platforms to step up detection and removal of election-related deepfakes, block repeat offenses and make it mandatory to run prominent newspaper advertisements informing about the prevalence of deepfakes.
Amit Shah's edited video, which caught the ECI's attention, appears to have been simply edited, rather than processed using AI. In the politically charged atmosphere ahead of the election, AI-generated misinformation is gaining traction on the internet.
But is all fake news generated using AI? Why is it important to distinguish between edited content and deepfakes? And what is the role of platforms, ECIs, political parties and the media in countering misinformation and fake news on social media? In the video, MediaNama founder and editor Nikhil Pahwa explores these questions and more.
