Earlier this week, outlet Eurogamer published a controversial review of ARC Raiders. In that review, the game’s use of AI voice generation had a significant impact on a site’s overall score, ultimately 2/5. As you can imagine, this caused a bit of a stir online, so much so that Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney weighed in on the issue via social media.
Yes, on the completely uncool platform of Twitter, Sweeney called Eurogamer’s review “political” and then responded to a number of responses about AI, Eurogamer’s criticism of AI, and the use of the technology across the gaming industry.
This series of replies is included below.
To reduce all of this to something a little more manageable, Sweeney basically argues that the use of AI will improve human productivity in some areas, and that this review’s view of things is particularly pessimistic. As seen above, Epic’s CEO doesn’t think voice acting jobs will be diminished by AI. In fact, those actors can do their job. and Technology that creates “infinite dialogue” that is “coordinated by humans.”
Whatever your stance on this, it’s clear that the use of AI in games is still very controversial. Also, deducting points from review scores for the presence of AI would be controversial in itself. Of course, all of this was revealed in more detail on social media, with Epic’s CEO fighting a lawsuit about AI helping game production productivity.
As for the reaction from those behind ARC Raiders itself, parent company Nexon revealed in a new interview that it’s “important to assume that all gaming companies are using AI now.” You can read more in the interview link below. As this conversation develops online, we grab some popcorn.
