With a dramatic escalation of the AI talent war, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xaiIt reportedly filed a lawsuit against the former engineer, stealing confidential trade secrets related to the Grok chatbot and accusing them of comparable to Openai. Complaints filed in federal court in California last week, name names Xuechen LiA Chinese citizen who worked as an engineer at Xai as a defendant. The lawsuit seeks unspecified financial damages and a restraining order to prevent Li from joining Openai.
What Xai's lawsuit against engineers alleges
According to the lawsuit, Li stole “standard AI technology” with features “better than what ChatGpt offers” with the intention of using them in his new role in Openai. According to Xai's complaints, Li began working for the company last year and played an important role in the development and training of Grok Chatbot. The lawsuit alleges that Li got confidential information in July shortly after accepting a job offer from Openai and selling Xai stock $7 million.Xai argues that these stolen secrets can allow Openai to enhance ChatGpt with Grok's “more innovative AI and imaginative features.” The lawsuit adds that it will save billions of dollars and years of effort from Openai and other competitors.The complaint also alleges that Li stole the company's files and admitted that he attempted to “cover my truck” during the August 14 meeting. Xai says he discovered additional stolen material on a device he has not revealed.
Xuechen Li sold Xai stocks before leaving
The lawsuit alleges that, in addition to the $4.7 million received early in the summer after Li convinced Xai to liquidate $2.2 million worth of Xai shares, he copied the documents to at least one personal system, just as about $7 million in cash was made available from a laptop issued by Xai. Chinese citizen Xuechen Li lives in mountain scenery. He reportedly received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University and joined Xai in early 2024. He is said to be among around 20 early engineers working on the company's GROK model that granted wide access to Xai's unique information.
