(Reuters) – Billionaire Elon Musk is working to launch an artificial intelligence startup that will rival Chat GPT maker OpenAI, the Financial Times familiar with his plans on Friday. He quoted the words of the person concerned.
Twitter owner Musk has assembled a team of AI researchers and engineers, along with some investors in SpaceX and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), to join his new venture, the FT reports. We are discussing investing money.
Musk’s plan calls for a group of AI researchers and executives, including himself, to halt development of a system more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 for six months, citing potential risks to society. It’s been a few weeks since.
Companies from Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) are pushing to incorporate generative AI, the technology behind chatbot sensation ChatGPT, into their products.
However, ChatGPT has faced backlash as regulators demand clear rules ahead of mass adoption. Italy has banned his ChatGPT for privacy concerns, but the European privacy watchdog has created a task force as a first step towards a common AI policy.
Musk has secured thousands of graphics processing units from Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), a system that powers the computing needed for intensive tasks such as AI and high-end graphics, the FT said. Shares of the chip company, which declined to comment, rose on Friday’s news.
Musk registered a company, X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada last month, according to state filings. The company lists Musk as its sole director and Jared Virtual, managing director of Musk’s family office, as his secretary.
It was not clear if the company was related to Musk’s reported AI startup efforts. Musk did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Musk is one of the co-founders of OpenAI, which was founded as a non-profit organization in 2015. He stepped down from the company’s board in his 2018.
