Eight additional organizations have signed onto the federal government's voluntary code of conduct on artificial intelligence.
These organizations include computer maker Lenovo, software company Salesforce, credit card company MasterCard and enterprise systems company Kindl.
Canadian signatories include Toronto tech hub MaRS Discovery District, virtual tutoring company Alloprof, consulting firm Levio and a Quebec association of real estate agents.
Those who adopt the rules, introduced last year, must agree to take several measures aimed at mitigating AI risks, such as screening datasets for potential bias and monitoring the systems for potential harm.
So far, leading AI companies including Cohere, Mila and Vector Institute have agreed to the code, along with tech companies including BlackBerry, IBM and Telus, but other companies have criticized the guidelines.
Tobi Luedtke, founder and CEO of Shopify Inc., said he doesn't support the code, saying Canada doesn't need any more “judgments” and instead needs to encourage people to start businesses here.
