MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is exploring potential opportunities to collaborate with Singapore's Smart Nation Group to advance the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors.

The DTI also signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Siemens to renew their partnership to drive Industry 4.0 transformation in the Philippines.

In a statement, the DTI said Trade Minister Alfredo Pascual discussed possible areas of collaboration, including AI applications, with the Smart Nation Group during his visit to Singapore last week.

The Smart Nation Group is part of the Prime Minister's Department of Singapore and managed by the Ministry of Communications and Information, and is responsible for guiding Singapore's digital transformation and the development of its Smart Nation strategy.

“The Philippines is committed to working closely with regional and global leaders in AI to ensure our country remains at the forefront of technological innovation. By collaborating with international experts and institutions like Singapore's Smart Nation Group, we aim to harness the transformative power of AI to drive economic growth, strengthen public services, and position the Philippines as a globally competitive leader in the AI space,” Pascual said.

Based on the National AI Strategic Roadmap, the DTI is building an AI ecosystem in the Philippines to position the country as a regional center of excellence for AI innovation.

As part of its AI roadmap, the DTI will launch the country's Centre for AI Research (CAIR) next month.

CAIR will collaborate with government agencies, researchers, universities, research institutes, start-ups, SMEs and multinational companies in AI research and development and technology application, and will support the digital transformation of local enterprises through the provision of consulting services and AI technology products.

In a separate statement, the DTI said a new MOU was signed with Siemens in Singapore last Friday to expand the two companies' efforts to accelerate digital industrial transformation in Singapore.
