Disrupting AI Apps: New ChatGPT Tool Drops Insurance Comparison Stocks – News and Statistics

The owner of MoneySuperMarket has lost £144 million in value after launching a new insurance price comparison app on ChatGPT, the Telegraph reports. Shares in Moni Group fell as much as 13.8% on Tuesday as investors expressed concerns that rivals using artificial intelligence could squeeze the company’s business.

The decline also affected Future PLC, owner of insurance company Admiral & GoCompare, as well as Moni Group, as concerns about AI disruption continue to impact the London stock market. The decline was caused by the introduction of the Tuio Home app, developed by Spanish startup Tuio. The app allows users to check home insurance prices by entering a property description in ChatGPT.

Mony Group owns several comparison websites including TravelSupermarket, cashback site Quidco and consumer finance website MoneySavingExpert. Future’s London Stock Exchange shares fell as much as 6.6%, while Admiral shares fell more than 2%.

The incident follows a similar slide in US insurance stocks on Monday after US company Insurify launched its own AI-powered price comparison app. Insurify’s tools also allow users to compare prices on insurance products by typing queries into ChatGPT. Admiral sold car insurance comparison site Compare.com to Insurify in March 2023 and Confused.com in April 2021.

RBC analysts noted that the U.S. comparison website market is less developed and said new AI comparison apps would particularly hurt U.S. insurance companies. They suggested that the impact on UK comparison websites was likely to be exaggerated, adding that companies like Mony Group were in a good position to develop similar AI apps in-house.

Last week, software stocks were also affected by concerns about AI disruption after Anthropic announced a new legal chatbot. This caused the stock prices of software development companies such as RELX and Sage to plummet.
