Disgaea 7 Interview: “I wanted a return-to-origins approach”

AI Basics

The Disgaea series has been a hit for 20 years, but no other game combines hardcore stat maximization with goofy anime nonsense. I’ve been smashing prinnies and taking over the Netherworld since the beginning, and I can’t imagine that changing.

However, the last game in the series (Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny) unfortunately has a fairly small selection of classes and some terrible technical limitations on the Switch, making it difficult for me to press all the appropriate buttons. I couldn’t.

Hopefully this October will be different as Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless releases on Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC. I was fortunate enough to interview Disgaea 7 producer Shunsuke Minowa to learn more about the upcoming game. His answer got me so excited about the nonsense of the underworld.

The new work in the “Disgaea” series is based on the theme of Japanese history.

From the beginning of development, I wanted to create a story that was set mainly in one underworld, with a “return to origin” approach for “Disgaea 7”. Actually, the word “bushido” came up during the initial planning stage, and I thought about what it meant and how I could make it an interesting setting. And finally, the story of “regain bushido” was born. “Historical Japanese underworld without Bushido”.

Disgaea 7 will feature two main characters for the first time. What makes Fuji and Piririka different from previous characters in the series?

In “Makaisenki Disgaea 7”, for the first time in the series, the female character Pririca will be the main character in the story, and the male character Fuji will play a supporting role. However, Fuji also has a purpose, and the story gradually develops along two main axes. For that reason, Fuji and Pririca are not heroes and heroines, but “partners” who support each other when creating the scenario.

Disgaea 7 has a lot of new mechanics, but the one I’m most excited about is Jumbify. How does this massive transformation ability work in-game?

Jumbification makes characters gigantic and out of the battlefield under certain conditions. This allows that character to attack anywhere on the field, and each character has a specific ‘Junbility’ that affects the entire field. Jumbification not only increases your fighting power, but also allows you to bypass certain stage clear conditions and challenges. Enemies can also use jumbifications, so keep your jumbifications ready to counterattack.

I’m also very interested in item transmigration. Items have always been a big part of Disgaea thanks to the Item World, but how does Reincarnation fit into this?

Item Rebirth builds on the classic Item World feature, allowing players to further enhance their items. In Item Rebirth, you can reincarnate an item that has been strengthened to its limit in the Item World. You can also combine item-specific traits, such as increased counterattack rate and increased movement distance, to further enhance items by inheriting rare and random traits.

It was really nice to see Satanic Intelligence come back again. Were there any changes in this version?

In Disgaea 7, we added a cost to using auto-battle and gave players the option to skip auto-battle at any time. This allows players to enjoy the process of leveling up and enhancing their characters while giving them the option to choose their auto-battles carefully, rather than making auto-battles an unrestricted-use feature that detracts from the gameplay experience.

Using AI to fight people online is an interesting way to add online play to the series. What made you go in this direction?

The Demonic Intelligence feature received a lot of criticism for negatively impacting the enjoyment of the original Disgaea gameplay. However, the idea of using AI to control a character’s movements was seen as a potentially interesting element that could be made interesting in some way. AI Ranked Battle is one implementation of this concept, where your character, magical abilities, weapons and armor are enhanced with his AI elements to create strategic and interesting gameplay.

I was happy to hear that Disgaea 7 has more character classes than any other game in the series. What’s your favorite new feature?

Bigeye is my favorite of the new characters. It is a type of character that has never existed in the Disgaea series so far, and the design as a high-level monster type character blends in seamlessly. Among the existing characters, I like the magic swordsman (female). She has rune eyes and is a beautiful woman who can wield swords and magic at the same time.

Perhaps the biggest change Disgaea 6 has made to the series is the 3D character models. What was it like working with this new art style?

One of the challenges we faced when moving to 3D was that it became more difficult to hide imperfections. In the 2D era, even if the character had a slightly strange pose or position, it didn’t feel out of place because it was 2D. However, in 3D, even small imperfections can make a big difference, requiring a lot of fine-tuning and can be costly.

On the other hand, 3D has many advantages. For example, we learned that characters can be made larger without losing detail, and that the ability to freely move the camera opens up new possibilities for game expression. Overall, I think the benefits of 3D outweigh the challenges, allowing us to create more immersive and visually stunning games.

When you were young, you were obsessed with “Makaisenki Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days”. What was so fun about Rosalyn’s adventures?

I loved the combat system, especially the lifting and throwing mechanics and area of effect skills. I’m basically the type of person who gets bored with his slow-paced SRPG battles, but the Disgaea series takes a satisfyingly simple approach, powering up the protagonist and tactics like lifting and throwing. or charge into battle with a devastating AoE attack. . It was really fun!

You’ve been a fan of the series for many years, how does it feel to play such an important role in the creation of a new work?

This was an unbelievable experience for me as a mere player, and probably unbelievable for me the day before I got an offer from the development team. However, I am truly grateful that you believed in my love for the Disgaea series and trusted me. I am happy to be able to make .
