LAHORE: The Commissioner has directed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to ease traffic congestion in provincial cities.
The decision was taken at a meeting on traffic congestion and traffic flow in the city chaired by Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood, who gave instructions for five points (roads) with different traffic congestion levels in the city to be supported by AI traffic learning through Safe City cameras.
He said all the causes of traffic obstruction would be improved through continuous AI traffic learning. He also directed the LWMC to remove all waste containers from major roads in the first phase to improve traffic flow.
The Commissioner directed the Tepa and district administrations to remove illegal and unnecessary signboards from roads and footpaths. He also directed them to take steps to identify illegal parking and traffic congestion in the city with the help of Safe City Cameras.
The briefing said that in the first phase, clearance of squatters, illegal parking and traffic awareness camps across the township is working. Tepa said lane markings at traffic signals should be checked and lane markings painted wherever necessary.
The commissioner tasked with removing extra posts and planks from all roads in the city. He said traffic flow in the city could be maintained only on the basis of a practical traffic engineering plan.
He said practical steps are being taken in line with the Prime Minister's clear directives on comprehensive traffic intervention in Lahore. Along with changes in road and signal design, the comprehensive plan also requires traffic education and awareness, adding that parking in approved parking areas in commercial buildings is essential and enforcement is key for this. He said changes in road design, patchwork, signs, billboards, installation of tire killers and other measures can improve traffic flow.
