The Trump administration's proposal to deregulate artificial intelligence products used in health care would shift the burden of vetting those tools onto health systems, which would have to work harder to prove their technology is trustworthy, experts say.
In a document released late Monday, the federal agency that regulates health information technology proposed eliminating requirements for software vendors to disclose how they develop and evaluate AI tools.
If implemented as written, this proposal would mean that healthcare providers using AI products would need to require technology vendors to provide that information to ensure the tools can be used safely and effectively with their patient populations. It is especially important to obtain these details in order to compare available products and ensure that they are implemented fairly and properly.
