An artificial intelligence (AI) deep fake video of a 13-year-old missing woman “returning” has sparked outrage over the technology’s abuse.
In 2010, Iwona Wieczorek disappeared after leaving a nightclub in Sopot, Poland early in the morning.
Wieczorek, who was 19 at the time, was last spotted by CCTV cameras at several locations on his way home.
Wieczorek’s disappearance was one of Poland’s most high-profile cases and had a profound impact on the country.

A one-minute clip posted to TikTok last month shows the AI-generated Wieczorek, who hasn’t been seen in over a decade, speaking directly to the camera.
“Don’t you recognize me? I’m Iwona Wieczorek. Today I’ll tell you my story,” a deepfake-looking older-looking Wieczorek says in the clip. daily mail.
“In July 2010, a few friends and I decided to go to a party at the Dream Club in Sopot.
“I got into an argument with a friend. At about 02:50 I left the club onto the seaside boulevard. I went home.
“But due to an unexplained disappearance, I was unable to return home.”

The AI-generated clip ends with Wieczorek asking internet users to post their theories about what happened when she disappeared over a decade ago.
Abuse of deepfake technology
The deepfake video has been viewed more than 3.4 million times on TikTok, but using AI to resurrect the missing woman’s image has been criticized as offensive and exploitative.
according to daily mailWieczorek’s mother denounced viral deepfake footage to Polish newspaper fact: “Why would anyone make fun of a human tragedy? Why is she playing with my daughter’s image and family tragedy.
The video highlights the lack of legislation in place to protect victims from deepfake exploits as AI technology becomes more sophisticated and accessible.
There are currently no federal laws in the United States to prevent the use of images of people without their consent in deepfake porn and related technologies.
March, Petapixel A high school student who created an AI deepfake video of a principal shouting racist slurs and threatening black students has reported an incident that was allegedly not against the law.
