Mary-Late Laibhen ’28 was recently accepted into Break Through Tech’s AI program, where she will learn the skills she needs to pursue her goal of a career in machine learning and cybersecurity.
“Through this program, I hope to make meaningful connections and gain experience working on a larger, more diverse team,” says Leiben, a computer science major. “I also want to deepen my understanding of AI and machine learning and continue to hone my technical skills.”
This year-long program teaches first- through third-year college students the skills they need to prepare for a career in data science, AI, or machine learning.
Laibhen is interested in the intersection of AI and security. She wants to build smart, ethical systems that protect data in an increasingly digital world.
“As technology continues to advance, I think it’s important that AI systems are designed to be not only effective, but also responsible and safe,” Leiben says. “Participating in the work of developing tools that enable both innovation and safety is truly motivating.”
Leiben says the Break Through Tech AI program is a great opportunity to move closer to her career goals.
“The program’s Machine Learning Fundamentals course strengthens my technical understanding, and the AI Studio project gives me hands-on experience tackling real-world challenges,” says Laibhen. “We are particularly excited about the opportunity to work with companies and gain insight into how AI is applied in professional settings.”
Laibhen first became interested in machine learning. Applied Python Last fall, I collaborated with Corey Scott, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science. “At first I thought the subject was boring, but as I worked on different projects, I started to see how fascinating and impactful it was,” she says. “This class ultimately motivated me to apply and inspired my goal of a career in cybersecurity.”
After being inspired by this class, Leiben decided to join a program at NASA, where he and his teammates conducted research and explored Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML). Through this program, Leiben learned how to apply machine learning models to small, low-power devices and was introduced to a completely different side of AI.
“Being able to engage in real-world research and see practical applications of machine learning further piqued my interest and excited me about the possibilities of this field,” says Leiben.
The 2026-27 students in Break Through Tech’s AI program will spend this summer completing online courses and labs through the Machine Learning Foundations summer course. Students will then be assigned to teams to work on real-world AI projects, participate in career development and networking opportunities, and receive one-on-one mentoring and career coaching from AI industry experts.
Upon successful completion of the program, students earn a certificate in machine learning from Cornell University and receive a monetary award.
“This program is an important step in helping me build both the technical skills and professional connections I need to pursue a career in machine learning and cybersecurity, and I’m excited about the growth and opportunities it provides,” says Leiben.
