Collaboration with AI innovators critical to the UK's construction success

High-growth AI accelerator for Innovate UK's Bridgeai program is provided by Digital Catapult. Supports startups to improve and develop scalable solutions for the construction sector

The UK construction sector is at a crossroads. The pressure to decarbonise, achieve ambitious goals and improve operational efficiency has encouraged industry leaders to rethink their approach to deep technology innovation.

The sector is set to be worth £36.2 billion by 2030, so businesses recognize the need to adopt new solutions, which is where collaboration between construction leaders and startups becomes important.

With Digital Catapult, deep tech startups can successfully scale back, recognizing how small and medium-sized businesses across the country are developing new, pioneering solutions for new solutions that will help solve some of the biggest challenges in the construction sector. However, collaboration between startups and industry leaders is important to do this.

A key sector of breakpoints?

As it stands, the UK construction sector has experienced several issues, including a lack of national skills. It is estimated that 251,500 additional construction workers will be needed by 2028 to meet the demand. This is a problem that is plagued by an aging workforce and inadequate training programs.

The sector also faces ambitious goals to achieve housing goals and improve national infrastructure. According to the National Statistics Bureau (ONS), 184,390 homes were completed in 2024, significantly below the previous government's 1.5m home target by the end of the parliamentary term. These challenges are exacerbated by operational bottlenecks in the sector, including health and safety concerns.

The rise in workplace injuries is another reason why many construction companies are trying to integrate deep technological solutions into their businesses.

A labor survey found that between 2023 and 24, construction workers lost more than 400,000 days of work due to workplace injuries, costing the UK economy more than £21 billion.

Lack of skills, ambitious building goals, and health and safety concerns have urged many companies to rethink their relationship with deep technology and explore startup solutions in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

AI Solutions: Game Changers for Construction

For over a decade, Digital Catapult has been working with companies across the UK to accelerate Deep Tech's practical applications in industry, helping businesses understand how deep technological innovation is important to unlock opportunities.

Our work includes helping to tackle some of the construction sector's most pressing challenges by considering how technologies, including AI and ML, to improve construction site health and safety, and to improve resource utilization, project planning and upskilled workforce.

In fact, people with an increasing number of analysts and experts also recognize the value of adopting AI innovation in the construction sector, and a study by McKinsey & Co estimates that AI can increase construction productivity by up to 20% by improving project planning and resource management.

Digital Catapult has partnered with organizations in several sectors to support the adoption of AI-driven solutions, and is aware of how these solutions can support the construction sector.

Despite the deep value of innovation for the sector, barriers to collaboration between industry leaders and pioneering startups are hindering the success of AI-driven solutions integration and adoption in the sector. Resource and capacity constraints mean that many startups lack the network, ability, and opportunity to try out solutions in a real-world independent environment with effective feedback from industry experts.

Among industry leaders, there is reluctant to innovate, while also being internally resistant to innovative solutions developed by startups, which could hinder the success of both parties.

Because of these barriers to innovation, digital catapults offer interventions to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing that can overcome these challenges and unlock opportunities in the construction industry.

Digital Catapult and Bridgeai: Convening Ecosystems

The Innovate UK Bridgeai programme is provided by Innovate UK, Digital Catapult, The Alan Turing Institute and The Hartree Center (STFC) British Standards Institution (BSI) to promote the adoption of AI in the high-growth sector of the UK economy, including construction.

As part of this work, we recently launched an accelerator for the construction sector with partners Buro Happold, Versarien and Foster + Partners, enabling 10 deep tech companies to scale by providing innovation and technology consultants, access to workshops, industry expertise and the opportunity to work with these three industry leaders.

Our Construction Accelerator enables participating startups to refine and develop scalable solutions for the construction sector, including AI assistants for housing planning applications with PlanningHub, and new solutions to support solutions that combine sensor data and computer vision to combine material durability with Donaa. The program ensures that a cohort of startups will work with industry leaders to encourage the collaboration essential to the construction sector to succeed in the coming years.

In addition to supporting startups, Digital Catapult works with businesses to set effective data strategies and identify potential high impact AI/ML use cases. This support is more important than ever as construction sectors continue to decline.

We help organizations unlock data value, explore transformative AI solutions, and enhance operational resilience.

This collaboration not only promotes industrial decarburization through more efficient solutions, but will also enable these deep tech companies to successfully scale their solutions according to the previous Bridgeai participants' achievements.

Since 2023, the Bridgeai program has supported 24 startups, allowing 22 proof-of-concept, and more than £1.7 million in private funds protected for more than a year of startups.

This success speaks to the importance of our ability to convene and shows why it encourages collaboration between industry leaders and startups to solve urgent challenges in the UK's major economic sectors. There is no doubt that similar success will be replicated in the construction industry, where collaborations that will make the sector's long-term success play a critical role, especially with new goals to provide 1.5m new homes by 2029.
