Chris Cuomo of NewsNation wants you to know that he is a serious journalist. He's just fallen into a laughing video of former CNN anchor and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who calls Sydney Sweeney's jean ads “Nazi propaganda,” and it's something special.
The fake AOC in the video seemed to think, “Yes, this looks like the real thing.” At one point, the AI version of the lawmaker claims that “skinny, attractive, blonde, blue-eyed, cisgender women descend from the oppressors of the country's slave neighbours.”
And then, professional newsman Chris Cuomo saw this and thought. This is very realistic.
“Nothing about Hamas or the people burning Jewish cars… Sweeney jeans ad?” he posted on X.
There was a watermark in the video. Literally, I said, “100% parody made with AI.” The account posted was called Memerunnergpt, and the Instagram post included “chatgpt + ai art” in the description. Come on, Chris.
AOC answer: “This is a deepfake guy. Use your critical thinking skills. At this point, I'm reposting Facebook memes and calling them journalism.”
After deleting his post (and by the way, I woke up for hours), Cuomo provided this masterpiece of apologies: “You're right…it was a deepfake (but it really sounds like you).
On his News Nation Show, Cuomo admitted his mistake, saying, “They got me. I. It was really good and it seemed like she was saying, but it wasn't her.” He then attacked the rest of the AOC to not blame Hamas enough. Because when you're hit by a chatbot, the mature response is definitely double your political grievances.
The problem is, even if you absolutely didn't know anything about AI or deepfakes, the content itself should have been a prize. When will AOC talk about someone's “small, bouncy fan bag” on the floor of the house? When did members of Congress use “sultry little seduction” in their official capabilities? However, Cuomo's desire to own Libs was clearly overwhelming, and his brain was completely stopped.
This is what makes Cuomo's facepret even more ridiculous. The Sydney Sweeney Jeans ads are controversial, did he want to be a weapon? It was almost a fake and was absolutely manufactured. I wrote about this last week. Check it out.
So Cuomo didn't fall into just fake content. He fell for false content about the false controversy. Layers above the layer of unreality, like a doll with a nest made of bullshit.

Cuomo wanted to believe it. He needed the AOC to waste Congress time commenting on Sydney Sweeney and others. He needed Democrats to be crazy people who were obsessed with jean ads rather than serious issues. His confirmation bias is very strong and you should notice all the red flags that overturn the part of his brain and indicate that the video is fake.

After being called, Cuomo did what everyone who fell for obvious fake content was doing. He made it worse.

She posted screenshots of a completely fake story that Taylor Lorenz claimed she wrote about the meme-turned-dachshund Whitney Chuston. When people pointed out that the article didn't exist, her defender ran into the classic: Well, isn't that what you're saying about the media that you can't believe this?

Joe Rogan is doing this constantly. He invented the story, got mad about it, found out it's fake, and then he could imagine it means something profound, somehow still mad. There is literally a web comic about this exact phenomenon. Because it happens frequently. People believe in fakes, they are corrected, and they argue that their own cheating is actually the fault of society.
“But it really sounds like you” may be the most prominent part. No, Chris, it doesn't sound like her. But in Cuomo's mind, this insane parody was indistinguishable from reality. Because his brain has been marinating on Twitter for a long time and he can't really talk about the difference.
We have problems when the person being the fact-checked can't find a fake that literally announces himself.
And it's just getting worse. The AI, who was tricked by Cuomo, was telling a clear story. Bad lip sync, ridiculous dialogue, huge watermarks. However, technology is improving every day. The fakes don't immediately announce themselves. They will be the perfect recreation of real people who say plausible things that never happened.
So what? If Cuomo can't find a fake that actually waving the flag “I'm a fake”, how will he handle the refined ones? How do journalists prioritize partisan point scores over basic verification?
The answer is that they don't. They share what they feel is proven. And when they are caught, they condemn the concept of society, the Democratic Party, or the objective truth itself. Something other than yourself.
