Chongqing – Professor Xiong Yu, a Chongqing native and Chongqing University alumnus, received a Commendation Award from the House of Lords for his contribution to the application of artificial intelligence to social transformation.
Mr Xiong, who is currently a Professor at the University of Surrey and a Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences, was presented with the award by Rami Ranger, Member of the House of Lords. This recognition highlights his efforts to use AI technology to address real-world social challenges.
Xiong was born and raised in Chongqing and studied at Chongqing No. 8 Junior High School before enrolling at Chongqing University. He believes that the university’s rigorous academic training and stimulating learning environment formed the standards that later guided his academic career in the UK.
Mr Xiong expressed the desire to strengthen cooperation between Chongqing and the UK by fostering academic research partnerships, business cooperation and broader exchanges. He believes that deepening ties between the two countries will create valuable opportunities to deepen cooperation in education, research and innovation.
Xiong, who has been celebrating Chinese New Year in the UK for more than 15 years, continues to preserve Chinese traditions with her family by decorating dumplings and lanterns and watching Chinese New Year celebrations online. For him, technology helps recreate a sense of home across distance, just as it connects people and ideas across borders.
