The Chinook's Edge School Board considered administrative procedures for the instruction of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools across the district at the June 25 board meeting.
The steps are designed to guide the ethical, safe and effective integration of AI technologies in schools, with the aim of improving the quality of education, personalizing the learning experience, improving educational outcomes and preparing students for a future shaped by AI technologies.
“The primary goal is to prepare students to succeed in their personal and academic endeavors, and to thrive in a world where AI plays a central role in shaping our society and economy,” said highlights of the board's meeting.
During the meeting, the board also considered the department's planned approach to implementing government requirements banning the use of mobile phones and social media in classrooms in the coming academic year.
Most of the division's schools strictly adhere to the state's minimum requirements.
The policy must be in place by January 2025. The board will develop the policy in consultation with staff, students and parents.
The board also received an update on health and safety in schools across the district and plans to implement the “Hour Zero” school emergency response system in the 2024-25 school year.
The program provides training and support to staff and aligns the language and processes that first responders use in emergency situations.
