AI has entered the classroom. In addition to that, teacher concerns about student indifference.

“A few of the things I see people using it all the time — if they're not there, I think they're just blindly looking at the universe,” Gary Ward, a physics, economics and business teacher at Brooks West Shore High School in Victoria, British Columbia, told Business Insider.

Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022 and the mass adoption of IT and other generation AI tools, the surrounding academic plagiarism has increased. Educators realized they needed to respond promptly, and adapted their curriculum to embrace and counter the technology that had great potential to become both teaching materials and “homework cheating machine.”

Ward, who was a teacher for about 30 years, said he noticed that he noticed an increase in AI.

“Literally, every student is using it this year,” he said. Ward said they are beginning to use defensively to try and prevent students from gambling all their assignments with artificial intelligence. He asked ChatGpt to help develop a work that would be more difficult for those who have completed it to feed back to LLM.

“I was just starting a conversation with ChatGpt and I went through it over and over. I explained what was going on at my prompt and said, 'This is what I want,'” Ward said. “These are things that students can do to allow answers in some large language models,” and usually it's more personalising it. ”

A similar strategy is ongoing, says Richard Griffin, a lecturer in the Department of Business, specializing in project management and portfolio development at Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, UK.

The university has developed an internal system that allows educators to supply challenges. This provides an evaluation of how difficult it is to cheate it with AI and recommendations to make it even more difficult.

“The IT department has created their own tools to assess how secure AI is or how well it is AI-savvy. They give you a little grade to say, 'Well, really, we need to adjust some of this,'” says Griffin. “We don't provide specific information, but it's a bit unsafe. This isn't very safe. We need to add a deeper challenge here. Or we need to make this more personal.”

According to the ward, the best defense against AI so far is spinning back the watch for decades.

“I tried to go back towards the handwritten assignments rather than letting them do that on the computer,” Ward said. “That way you can see how they write. I know it belongs to them.”

Austin State University in Nacodoches, Texas, says that many students do not meet these benchmarks by studying the typical process of seeking AI answers.

“Many students today use AI as a way to fulfill their assignments, creating loss of critical thinking, loss of originality, loss of discernment, loss of personal reflection, and more.”

On Shockley's side, he was an early adopter of AI and experimented with the LLMS features shortly after the launch of ChatGPT. He hopes that the technology will not only endure long term, but also improve exponentially, and he began to believe it is important to help students develop healthy relationships with it.

“Since the advent of AI, my thinking on this topic has moved from charm to fear, like a pendulum, given how it is used,” Shockley said. “However, my appeal to AI is rooted in the energy sector, industry, the natural environment, medicine, science, and human-centered care improvements, and things that can be improved, but I have decided to be open to using AI and my pedagogy in the Socrates approach.”

Originally, he developed assignments for undergraduate courses in philosophy and religion studies, encouraging students to interact with LLM to analyze their output. He wanted students to not only learn how to ask smarter questions, but also develop healthy skepticism in artificial intelligence.

He then abandoned his assignments and stopped allowing lower-level classes to use AI. He discovered that too many students used it to cheat completely. In one example, students said they submitted a paper cited hallucinated quotes from the book by Shockley's co-authors.

“For me as a philosopher, the use of AI in the classroom is limited to research among advanced level students doing mature research,” Shockley said. “They have the opportunity to grow and have their own critical thinking skills.”

Some allocations are of course more reluctant

Shockley still assigns research papers, but tries to deploy “experiential” assignments as much as possible. For example, in the undergraduate's environmental ethics and religious studies courses, Shockley sent students to visit local natural and religious places.

He wants students to engage with students, and he hopes to “hook” them together more personally and more personally. If you do that, they may not be likely to resort to AI to complete the task. Additionally, he is beginning to attach reflective components to challenges that AI could potentially shoot in the game on its own.

“What do students want? What do people want to experience these days?” he said. “What do young people want to experience these days? They want to have incredible experiences, transformative experiences, cool experiences, etc., how can you bring them together?”

In general, certain areas are more insulated against AI fraud, given that it would be better suited to project-based challenges. In Griffin's case, many of the business courses he teaches require real interactions with real clients.

“We challenge them with very difficult tasks in the real world to deliver projects for our clients. There are very diverse expectations and understandings not only from client perspectives, but also from our kind of undergraduate students,” Griffin said.

Like Shockley, Griffin focuses on incorporating reflections into his curriculum, hoping that layered steps will encourage deeper thought.

“I use projects and portfolios, so people are in the real world. We also rely on that reflective aspect,” Griffin said. “So they provide clients and projects. If they use AI to really give clients harsh information, they wouldn't be particularly happy.

“And that reflective element means they have to dig deeper and give us the integrity that it doesn't exist in the usual kind of tasks and assessments,” he added.

As AI continues to develop, a shift to oral assessment and discussion-based challenges is likely also likely, Griffin said.

“So, ratings, I don't know if I'll say they'll be more difficult,” he said. “They will certainly be more focused. I think we need to embrace that. We can't teach the topic as broad as we want, but we can certainly teach criticism.”
