There is a way to create a virtual CEO using AI. First, build a database using every email, report, study, presentation, and video conference the CEO has seen, written, or said. From there, the AI ​​can glean her CEO's problem-solving approach, priorities, and ways to consider proposals.

Managers can use this AI CEO to test ideas, get feedback on their suggestions, and mine it for specific company problems. The real CEO of her may depend on the virtual CEO to handle day-to-day matters. Even if the CEO leaves or moves on to another role, the chatbot can continue to provide advice and insight. According to some CEOs, it might be worth it.

Another question is whether companies should do this. Research is emerging into the ethics of creating digital twins of humans based on how similar they are to someone else, including replicating their physical appearance and mental state. Digital twins are a challenging field. The very idea of ​​using AI for this purpose raises alarms about its potential to be used for manipulation. Even if the person gives permission, digital replicas can raise questions about personhood and what it means to be human.

Nonetheless, some are experimenting with the concept. Roger Hamilton, CEO of Genius Group, an educational technology and education company, built a chatbot based on Alan Turing, the famous computer scientist who described a machine capable of performing calculations in his 1936 paper on computation. In the 1950s, he devised what is known as the Turing test, a means of determining whether a computer thinks like a human. The chatbot is built using OpenAI's GPT-3 language model as its core, on top of which it adds additional capabilities such as memory and real-time internet access. It is enabled through integration with Microsoft Copilot.

Hamilton believes this AI version of Turing can be applied to current business problems. In April, he appointed the company's virtual representation of Turing (which also uses a likeness of the real Turing) as the company's chief AI officer.

This version of AI Turing wrote a white paper outlining the future of that version of AI and the role of education in it. Hamilton said the company was so impressed with the effort that AI rose to the top of the hiring list for a chief AI officer. “The company already knows more than any other candidate we are looking for for this role,” he said.

Sam Glassenberg, CEO of Level Ex, a company that develops video games aimed at training doctors, is skeptical about the value of Turing-based chatbots.

Chatbots can't compete

Turing “developed some of the fundamental theories of computation from scratch,” he says. “I highly doubt that chatbots will come up with new theories or insights on their own, at least based on today's technology.”

But Glassenberg sees value in creating an AI CEO. AI CEO will be able to capture the CEO's data records, emails, conversations, and organizational knowledge and provide the existing CEO and others within the company with context and what happened on various issues. and a successor.

Just providing a “comprehensive view” of the CEO, Glassenberg said, “is valuable to both the new CEO and the employees. If we can do that.”

Construction method

The most effective way to build this AI CEO is to take specific information from the CEO or decision maker's documentation and feed it into a large language model. This approach gives companies control over the amount and type of data they include. However, it is also important that these AI CEO models are relevant to the current context, which may be the biggest challenge facing their usefulness in driving business value.

Whiteley and Glassenberg believe there are limits to AI CEOs' ability to solve high-level problems and adapt to a changing world.

For example, it may be helpful for a new CEO to have access to a chatbot during the transition period. Whiteley said AI CEOs “may work for several months until they are no longer able to adapt to the current business situation.”

Amorim also questions its long-term usefulness. “Can models relate the past to the real world?”

Although Mr. Turing died in 1954, Mr. Hamilton said that the Turing chatbot provided a great deal of support to his company, including helping him develop a five-year business strategy and ranking system for one of his projects. He said he did. Without the chatbot's help, “it would have taken a lot longer to put everything together,” he said.

Turing's chatbot “is now in every executive team meeting,” he said.
