What you learn:
- What Bosch Rexroth thinks about AI in product design.
- From a company's perspective, how does the manufacturing industry adopt AI?
Ctrlx Automation Product Manager – We were able to spend some time with Garrett Wagg, the automation and electrification of Bosch Rexroth. In an email I asked a series of questions based on the theme of “Can I trust AI in the lifecycle of a product?” This is what he had to say.
How is AI growing into manufacturing integration?
AI integration in the manufacturing process has significantly grown and transformed the number of companies that manufacture their products. Factors such as data availability, machine learning, reduced cost of computing power, advanced AI platforms, and government funding initiatives have led to this integration.
Important benefits that this integration adds include predictive maintenance, quality control, process optimization, advanced robot deployment and demand forecasting.
Is AI accelerated the transition to fully automated processes? If so, what do you think?
Yes, AI is significantly accelerating the transition to fully automated processes. AI integration implements enhanced machine decision-making, improving awareness and understanding of the manufacturing environment, and significantly improving human robotic collaboration.
Traditional automation relies on pre-programmed features and fixed algorithms in the manufacturing process, but AI can make intelligent decisions based on real-time data on machines, adapt to changing conditions, and optimize performance.
How do control systems play an important role in managing AI utilization?
Control systems are extremely important for the implementation and management of AI platforms. The control system of the manufacturing setup serves as a bridge between AI insights and the physical world in which those insights are implemented.
Control systems ensure that AI recommendations are implemented in a safe, efficient and reliable way. This is done through the AI module along with PLC devices such as the Bosch Rexroth Ctrlx core equipped with a HAILO expansion module that communicates with the CTRLX safety controller and various sensors that close the data exchange loop.
How do open platform-based control systems differ in controls and AI capabilities that work on closed systems?
Open platform-based control systems offer great advantages for AI capabilities compared to closed systems. These benefits include the flexibility and customization that allow users to adjust AI tools based on applications or new features in the marketplace, not locked into their own systems. Other benefits include interoperability, the ability to rapidly communicate and exchange data between control systems and other systems such as ERP, MES, and data historians, making better use of the system's data.
What are the risks of increased AI adoption?
AI is a powerful and useful tool, but there are several risks to adopting AI. Some of these risks include security vulnerabilities. There, data is maliciously manipulated and AI makes false decisions.
Another security risk is data privacy. AI algorithms often require large amounts of data, which may contain sensitive personal information. The collection, storage and use of this data raises privacy concerns, especially if the data is not properly protected. Researchers, policymakers and industry leaders are addressing several safeguards of these concerns by implementing bias detection, false data identification and privacy that preserves AI platforms.
How should manufacturers approach integrating AI into their processes? Also, what are the important considerations to keep in mind?
Integrating AI into the manufacturing process is a strategic initiative that requires careful planning and implementation. A step-by-step approach that focuses on clear objectives and tackles potential challenges is often the most successful.
Some important considerations to keep in mind include identifying process problems, maximizing data collection, setting measurable goals, and determining what ROI is being received from the implemented AI. Finally, maintain safety and security at the forefront of the manufacturing process.
