California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new bill on Monday, with the aim of increasing online safety by creating barriers for AI high-tech developers.
Senate Bill 53, also known as the Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (TFAIA), has the goal of promoting the development and strengthening of new technologies while protecting the freedom and safety of internet users. The law requires AI companies to publicly disclose safety protocols used when meeting “frontier” barriers. Companies face a “frontier” barrier when they need huge amounts of electricity to complete AI calculations. The protocol is intended to prevent activities that could cause mass destruction and mayhem, such as large-scale hacking projects.
In a statement, Newsom highlighted his goal of continuing to make California one of the world's leaders in AI Tech Development.
California has proven that it can establish regulations to protect its communities while ensuring that the growing AI industry continues to thrive. This law balances that. AI is a new frontier of innovation, and California is not only here, but also powerful as a national leader by enacting the country's number one frontier AI safety law that builds public trust as this emerging technology rapidly evolves.
The new laws were expected backlash from AI companies, many of whom argued that AI laws should be enforced at the federal level.
This statement is in line with Newsom's previously stated goal of California becoming a world leader in AI technology. Earlier this year, Newsom asked AI developers to compile reports on California AI for California's first Nation Report. This report helped solidify California's top rankings as a national leader in ethical and responsible AI.
