PORTLAND (WGME) — Gubernatorial candidate Bobby Charles on Friday expressed concerns about AI data centers and answered questions about his campaign’s use of AI.
Charles said at a press conference Friday morning that he has concerns about the practical implications of AI.
Charles said supporting Maine’s data centers requires ensuring that the environmental impact is minimal.
But when asked about his campaign’s frequent use of AI to portray himself and his political opponents on social media, Charles suggested his main concerns were accuracy and accountability.
“My attitude was exactly the same when I was in the military, when I was in the military for 10 years, when I was assistant secretary of state,” Charles said. “You have your line, I have my lane, you have your lane, you have your lane, you have the digital lane. I want the best product from that digital lane. They will be accountable to me. If they make a mistake and they make some mistakes, I will correct them and get them back on track.”
Charles said one of the mistakes the digital team made involved a post claiming he was born in Maine.
He was actually born in Virginia and raised in Maine.
He says he made changes to his digital team after learning about it.
