BMC’s purpose-built AI bridges the mainframe skills gap and unlocks insights when you need them.

BMC Software, the AI-era automation company, announced new innovations that bring purpose-built AI to the mainframe tools operators and developers use every day. As experienced mainframe professionals retire and access to expertise becomes more difficult, BMC provides application intelligence and organizational knowledge built into your workflows to unlock insights the moment you need them. Businesses turn to BMC first for reliable execution with AI that bridges mainframe skills gaps and provides insights when it matters.

These new capabilities advance BMC’s long-term vision for the future of AI in mainframe transformation. Evolve from AI that provides insights to AI that enables coordinated and managed execution across development and operational workflows.

New features and innovations in mainframe AI include:

Provide all developers with context about application performance
According to BMC’s 2025 State of the Mainframe report, developers who understand critical mainframe applications are retiring, and 66% of employees identify as Gen Z or Millennials. While AI can help young developers interpret code, organizations still lack a unified view of application risk, complexity, and concentration of knowledge within the organization. This is the kind of visibility leaders need to confidently manage application modernization investments and succession planning.

Built on BMC AMI zAdviser Enterprise, an AI-powered mainframe development productivity insights platform, zAdviser Enterprise Application Analysis is a new feature that combines source code analysis, BMC AMI DevX telemetry, and development productivity data into a single AI-generated narrative intelligence report. Built on mainframe-native data sources inaccessible to distributed tools, it uncovers production stability patterns, code complexity, and modernization recommendations, integrating tasks that were previously required manually across multiple disconnected systems. Leaders can assess which applications are at highest risk and where to prioritize modernization efforts so they can maintain applications with confidence.

Leverage institutional knowledge
As the mainframe skills gap widens and experienced professionals retire, organizations risk losing the organizational knowledge needed to operate critical applications and systems. Now pervasive across the BMC AMI portfolio, BMC AMI Assistant brings Knowledge Hub and Knowledge Expert Chat into your workflows, giving you access to your organization’s knowledge from sources such as runbooks, tickets, log files, and previous resolutions. This enables your team to close skill gaps and act with confidence.

“Despite CIOs pushing for greater use of AI to advance their modernization agendas, the mainframe industry is at a crossroads, with decades of organizational knowledge being shed,” said John McKenney, senior vice president and general manager of Intelligent Z Optimization and Transformation at BMC. “Organizations can no longer afford to spend days manually correlating data or digging through old runbooks to resolve a single incident. By building purpose-built AI directly into the tools these teams use every day, BMC takes the mystery out of how mission-critical applications work, empowering mainframe professionals, regardless of experience level, to respond faster and make changes with confidence.”

New mainframe security solutions are also being introduced to support customers as the IT industry prepares to reduce the lifetime of SSL/TLS certificates from 398 days to just 47 days by 2029. The new BMC AMI digital certificate management solution is the industry’s first automated certificate management purpose-built for mainframe environments and is designed to support multiple vendors. It provides a unified integration layer across enterprise certificate platforms to help prevent outages and compliance risks when manual management is no longer a viable option. The solution integrates with leading enterprise certificate management platforms such as Venafi® and Keyfactor® to automate the entire certificate lifecycle without requiring infrastructure changes.

said Steve Dickens, CEO and Principal Analyst at HyperFRAME Research. “BMC’s latest innovations demonstrate a deep understanding of the evolving role of the mainframe by incorporating purpose-built AI that captures and extends decades of organizational knowledge.”
