ChatGpt-Maker Openai has signed up with the legendary designer behind the iPhone to create an attractive gadget for using generative artificial intelligence (AI).
The ability to attract digital assistants as easily as talking to friends is built into eyewear, speakers, computers and smartphones, but some argue that the age of AI is sought a transformative new gizmo.
“The products we use to bring and connect us to technology that we can't imagine are decades old,” former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive said when the alliance with Openai was announced.
“It's common sense to think about it at least. Certainly there's something beyond these legacy products.”
Openai CEO Sam Altman said he didn't share details and that the prototype shared with him is “the coolest technology the world has ever seen.”
According to some US media, the device does not have a screen or wears it like a watch or a brooch.
Kyle Lee, a professor at the new school, said that AI has not yet been integrated into people's lives, so there is room for new products to suit its use.
According to Rob Howard, an AI innovator like Openai, it's not as important as whether or not they choose “professional” when choosing “professional”?
The industry is well aware of the epic failure of the AI PIN, a square gadget worn like a badge packed with AI features, but less than a year after its debut in 2024 it disappeared from the market due to a shortage of buyers.
The AI pin, which has been sold incredibly buzz by Startup Humane, was priced at $699.
According to CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood, Meta and Openai are making “big bets” on AI-infused hardware.
Openai has signed a multi-billion dollar deal and put Ive's startup in the fold.
Earlier this year, Google announced it was working on mixed reality glasses using AI Smarts, but Amazon continues to increase its Alexa digital assistant capabilities with Echo speakers and displays.
Apple embraces generative AI and slowly integrates it into the iPhone, even as its rivals move forward with technology. Plans to soup Siri chatbots using the generated AI are indefinitely delayed.
“The quest to create the AI interfaces people love is something Apple should have jumped around a long time ago,” says Olivier Blanchard, director of Futurum Research.
Blanchard is intended to be a hub that allows users to utilize AI. This is probably by talking to it without having to connect to the internet.
“We can't push everything out in the cloud,” Blanchard said, citing concerns about reliability, security, costs and harm to the environment due to energy needs.
“There's not enough energy in the world to do this, so we need to find a local solution,” he added.
Howard expects a fierce battle over what will become an essential personal device for AI, as there are only a limited number of things that someone is willing to wear and “people can feel overwhelmed.”
While new hardware dedicated to AI is not an obvious solution, Openai has the funds and talent to provide, according to Julien Codorniou, a partner at Venture Capital Firm 20VC and former Facebook executive partner.
Openai recently hired former Facebook executive and Instacart chief Fidji Simo as head of the application. Her job is to help answer hardware questions.
Many expect it to be the main way people order AI.
Google's chief Sundar Pichai has long expressed the vision of “ambient computing” that is waiting for technology to be visibly fused and called into the world.
“If you can speak instead, there's no longer a reason to type or touch,” Blanchard said.
He added that the spoken dialogue with technology “makes sense,” as “generative AI wants to become more and more human.”
But smartphones are so embedded in people's lives that it's everything to be snabbed quickly, Wood said.
